A hiker-only trail that is both family friendly and educational, Woodland Trail provides a first-hand look at forest habitat and ecology. At just under half a mile in length with no more than ten feet in elevation gain, Woodland Trail is an easy trail loop located near the parking lot just north of Peavy Lodge in Peavy Arboretum. Interpretive signs located along the trail provide visitors with easy to understand descriptions regarding the unique relationships found within a forested ecosystem. Woodland Trail passes through an area of McDonald Forest that is managed as mature forest for many types of wildlife to call home. Woodland Trail also provides a unique opportunity to explore history. Located at the end of a short spur midway along the trail is a pull-up bar installed between two trees. This bar was installed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s when the Arboretum was a CCC camp. Members of the CCC used this bar for both recreation and exercise. The pull-up bar is still used by visitors today and provides a rare opportunity to experience a part of history. Is the bar at its original height? Stop by and take a guess!
