CFIRP Trail can be accessed from Forest Discovery Trail, which is located in the Peavy Arboretum area of McDonald Forest. The entrance to Forest Discovery Trail is located near the Arboretum's western parking lot. To reach CFIRP Trail, follow Forest Discovery Trail west. Forest Discovery Trail will cross the 510 Road before intersecting with CFIRP Trail. CFIRP Trail acts as a connecting piece between Forest Discovery Trail, Section 36 Loop Trail, and the 514 Road. CFIRP Trail is a 1.25 mile long hiker-only trail with a 65 foot gain in elevation. This trail gets its name from an acronym for the College of Forestry Integrated Research Project, also known as CFIRP. CFIRP Trail leads visitors through a research project that began in 1989 when scientists, resource managers, and Oregon State University students designed and implemented specific alternatives to clear cutting. The goal of their research is to determine if a Douglas-fir forest can create features of an old growth forest while still generating timber that can be cut and sold. This trail presents a unique opportunity to view research first hand. Stop by and take a look!
