This short loop starts at the trail junction near the Forest Education Center. An interpretive sign at the junction describes the sustainable forest management activities implemented on the forest over the last decade. This trail passes by a round, concrete, spring fed cistern which served the historic Plunkett House which is still standing on park grounds near the entrance. The house dates back to the 1870's and was owned by the first pioneer child born in the Kings Valley area. As you enter the forest, take note that the forest management practices are allowing for a mixed age stand to develop and diversify over time. The South Loop Trail intersects with the South Meadow and South Ridge trails for those who are seeking a longer hike within the forests and upland meadows of this expansive 586 acre treasure.
